The main objective of LIFE BIODAPH2O is the scaling-up and implementation of an eco-efficient nature-based tertiary wastewater treatment (BIODAPH) at two demo sites located in water-stressed regions of the Mediterranean area. This system will produce reclaimed water that will contribute to diminish discharges of pollutants in freshwater ecosystems and to promote agricultural reuse.
Specific objectives are:
BIODAPH technology by designing, constructing and installing large-scale BIODAPH reactors coupled to a conventional secondary treatment or to an unconventional secondary treatment (anaerobic processes and constructed wetlands).
the design parameters of BIODAPH reactors and their operation conditions to enhance the purification capacity of the biological system (Daphnia Magna and microbial/algal biofilm).
the capacity of this technology as a tertiary system to improve the removal of pollutants such as emerging contaminants (pharmaceuticals, AMR, microplastics, and PFAS) as well as nutrients, suspended solids, and pathogens in comparison with existing technologies.
environmental impact reduction (e.g. carbon footprint, energy and chemical use) and socio-economical impact of the BIODAPH system, including social acceptance and the perception by users and consumers.
water reuse and on-site recycling for environmental, agricultural and industrial applications towards a sustainable water use demonstrating the benefits of BIODAPH technology through a sustainability assessment integrating the life cycle perspective.
the scientific and technological results of the project to policymakers, environmental and water agencies, users, and the general públic, contributing to EU strategies for water (EIP), efficient process industries (SPIRE PPP) and innovative environmental technologies (ETV).
BIODAPH technology through the collaboration between public entities and private companies involved in the project. A major objective is to establish the guidelines to properly replicate and exploit the technology by developing a replication and transferability plan as well as a business plan.
